What’s in a Name? Interland becomes Web.com

January 3 , 2006

Web Hosting Provider Interland.com will be changing their corporate image & their brand identity to Web.com. Interland acquired Web.com in late 2005 for an estimated $4.4 Million in Cash, Stock & Liabilities.

What does this mean to the Interland customer?
Absolutely nothing.

What does this mean to the Web.com customer?
Possibly a lot considering they will now be under the Interland umbrella.

Interland has been a steadily declining web hosting provider for the past several years with scores of bad reviews in the web hosting forums and a declining customer base when you examine their domain to DNS ratio.

Additionally since the Internet Bubble Days, when Interland went Public, their business model has been mostly to acquire new customers through the acquisition of other web hosts rather than have a competitive offer with a solid marketing plan to bring on new individual customers. In many ways this has placed Interland on the fringes of the competitive forces governing the technology of the web hosting industry & the demands of the web hosting clients.

Customer service has also lagged behind the industry standard. Customer service always fails if the server management standards are not high, and this could mean bad news for the soon to be migrated web.com customers.

All in all Interland scored big with the name web.com, an obvious prize for an online moniker but with Interland’s recent track record don’t expect this to pull them out from the depths of mediocrity.

* Interland’s Stock price was once valued above $200/ share and has been seen more recently below $3/ share.

All the best,
